Tournament Formats

All CTGA tournament play competition will have Player Pool Flights determined
by the number of players entered.

  • Individual Format Tournament Flights will be set and balanced as closely
as possible based on the number of players and handicap spreads.
  • Team Format Tournaments will have 2 Team Flights and will be set and balanced
as closely as possible based on the Team handicaps.
  • Flights provide Equitable Competition between players with comparable handicaps.
All players are flighted using their Stroke Index for that course, from the
lowest stroke index to the highest. The total number of players in the tournament
determines the number of Flights. To help maintain equitable competition,
Flights may vary in size by 2 or 3 players in some tournaments. This applies
to both Individual and Team events.

Team Competitions

2-Player "Green Ball"

Each team is given one (1) "special" ball designated as the "Green Ball". A major objective of this competition is to finish the 18 holes without losing the green ball. The Team designates Player #1 and Player #2.

  • Team player #1 must play the green ball on all odd-number holes, beginning with hole #1, and plays his/her own ball on all even-numbered holes.
  • Team player #2 must play the green ball on all even-number holes, beginning with hole #2, and his/her own ball on all odd-numbered holes.
  • Both the green ball and the regular ball are played until holed out.
  • The Low Net Score of the Team for each hole, be it the green ball or the regular ball, will be used for the team score. The team that posts the lowest net score without losing the green ball wins. The team with the second lowest net team score without losing the green ball is 2nd, etc. If all green balls are lost prior to completion of 18 holes, the team who completes the most holes prior to losing their green ball wins.

This is one of CTGA's most popular formats every year.

2-Player 9+9

Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. For the first nine holes, the one low net score of the team for each hole will be used for the team score. The team with the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

Teams may play with a spread of less than 7 strokes but their team handicap spread will be adjusted to 7…..(example: player A handicap is 4 and player B handicap is 5 which results in a deficit of 6 strokes to meet the minimum 7 stroke spread. The team handicap for player A will be reduced to a 1 and player B handicap will be reduced to a 2. Same scoring will apply.

Ryder Cup

Individual Competitions

Chicago

A format based on points, similar to Modified Stableford and Quota. In this format, golfers begin their rounds with a specific amount of “Negative Points” based on their handicaps (see below). During the round, Positive Points are awarded on each hole: Bogie – 1 point, Par – 2 points, Birdie – 4 points, Eagle – 8 points.

Player handicaps are used only to determine the beginning Negative Points. All Positive Points will be awarded based on actual scores made on each hole.

The objective is to get as many Positive Points as possible and clear your hurdle (the term used for your starting total of negative points) by as much as possible. The player with the highest point total within each Flight wins that Flight. Second highest point total wins 2nd place, etc.

Modified Stableford

A variation of Medal Play, with Flights, but hole-by-hole scoring is on a point system. Net Double Eagle = 8 points, Net Eagle = 5 points, Net Birdie = 2 points, Net Par = 0 points, Net Bogie = minus 1 point, Net Bogie or more = minus 3 points. The player with the highest point total within each Flight wins that Flight. Second highest point total wins 2nd place, etc.

Skins

Players compete against all other players within their Flight in Skins competition. Each Skin Flight will compete in two competitions.

Gross Skins (60% of Player Pool fund): A Skin is won if only one player has the lowest Gross Score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner.

Net Skins (40% of Player Pool fund): A Skin is won if only one player has the lowest Net Score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner.

Skins Player Pool is determined by the total number of players in the field and each Skins Flight receives 50% of the total Player Pool pot.

Optional "Trash" Competitions

Closest-To-The-Pin

(no additional fee required) - Each CTP Flight will compete on two designated Par 3 holes. Winner of a CTP hole will be the player whose ball, on the green, is measured closest to the hole.

Note: CTP applies only to the first shot attempt from the teeing area and the ball must come to rest on the green.

Deuces (Optional)

Cost to enter Deuces is $5.00. Gross scores will be used to determine Deuce winners. All players who have natural 2’s on their scorecard share in the Deuce pot.

The Deuce pot is determined by the number of Deuce players within the Deuce Flight and will be shared by the total number of 2’s made.

If no Deuces are recorded at a given tournament, the Deuce pot will be carried over to the next tournament, etc., until a Deuce winner is declared.
A Hole-In-One will not be credited as a Deuce earned.

Skins (Optional)

Cost to enter Skins is $5.00. Gross scores will be used to determine Skin winners for each hole. A skin is won if only one player has the lowest gross score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner.

The Skins pot is determined by the number of Skins players within each Skins Flight and will be shared by the number of skins won within that Skins Flight. If no Skins are recorded at a given tournament, the Skins pot will be carried over to the next tournament, etc., until a Skins winner is declared.
