Tournament COMPETITIONS AND
Formats
TOURNAMENT FLIGHTS
All CTGA tournament play competition will have Player Pool Flights determined
by the number of players entered.
- Individual Format Tournament Flights will be set and balanced as
closely as possible based on the number of players and handicap spreads.
- Team Format Tournaments will have 2 Team Flights and will be set
and balanced as closely as possible based on the Team handicaps.
- Flights provide
Equitable Competition between players with comparable handicaps. All
players are flighted using their Stroke Index for that course, from
the lowest stroke in index to the highest. The total number of players
in the tournament determines the number of Flights. To help maintain
equitable competition, Flights may vary in size by 2 or 3 players in
some tournaments. This applies to both Individual and Team events.
Individual Format Tournaments
Medal Play
(Stroke Play)
Players compete against all other players within their Flight, using full
handicaps. The player with the lowest net score round within each Flight
wins that Flight. Second lowest net score wins 2nd place, third lowest
net score wins 3rd place, etc.
Modified Stableford (Stroke
Play)
A variation of Medal Play, with Flights, but hole-by-hole scoring is on
a point system. Net Double Eagle = 8 points, Net Eagle = 5 points, Net
Birdie = 2 points, Net Par = 0 points, Net Bogie = minus 1 point, Net
Bogie or more = minus 3 points. The player with the highest point total
within each Flight wins that Flight. Second highest point total wins 2nd
place, etc.
Chicago (Stroke Play)
A format based on points, similar to Modified Stableford and Quota. In
this format, golfers begin their rounds with a specific amount of “Negative
Points” based on their handicaps (see below). During the round,
Positive Points are awarded on each hole: Bogie – 1 point, Par –
2 points, Birdie – 4 points, Eagle – 8 points.
Player handicaps are used only to determine the beginning Negative Points.
All Positive Points will be awarded based on actual scores made on each
hole.
The objective is to get as many Positive Points as possible and clear
your hurdle (the term used for your starting total of negative points)
by as much as possible. The player with the highest point total within
each Flight wins that Flight. Second highest point total wins 2nd place,
etc.
Skins
Players compete against all other players within their Flight in Skins
competition. Each Skin Flight will compete in two competitions.
Gross Skins (60% of Player Pool fund): A Skin is won
if only one player has the lowest Gross Score recorded for that hole.
If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner.
Net Skins (40% of Player Pool fund): A Skin is won
if only one player has the lowest Net Score recorded for that hole. If
more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner.
Skins Player Pool is determined by the total number of players in the
field and each Skins Flight receives 50% of the total Player Pool pot.
Team
Competition
The total number of players and teams in the tournament will determine
the number of Team Flights, either one or two Flights. You can form your
own 2 Player or 4 Player teams or sign up as individuals and you will
be randomly drawn and placed on a team with other individuals by the Tournament
Director.
2-Player Best Ball
Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. The One
Low Net Score of the team for each hole will be used for the team score.
The team with the lowest net team is the winner. The team with the second
lowest net team score is 2nd, etc.
2-Player Best
Ball - Restricted Handicaps
Same as 2-Player Best Ball, including Team scoring, except Team handicap
spread MUST be at least 7 strokes….. (example: if player A handicap
is 8, Player B handicap MUST be 15 or higher). Teams may play with a spread
of less than 7 strokes but their team handicap spread will be adjusted
to 7…..(example: player A handicap is 4 and player B handicap is
5 which results in a deficit of 6 strokes to meet the minimum 7 stroke
spread. The team handicap for player A will be reduced to a 1 and player
B handicap will be reduced to a 2. Same scoring will apply.
2-Player Best Ball
+ Bonus
Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. The One
Low Net Score of the team for each hole will be used for the team score.
If the Low Net Score of the team is a Par or better and the 2nd player
also has a Net Par for the hole, the team will be awarded 1 bonus point;

net scores for each hole will be used for the team score. The team with
the lowest net score for the 18 holes wins. The team with the second lowest
net score is 2nd, etc.
2-Player 9 + 9 Handicap

2-Player "Green Ball"
Each team is given one (1) "special" ball designated as the

- Team player #1 must play the green ball on all odd-number holes,
beginning with hole #1, and plays his/her own ball on all even-numbered
holes.
- Team player #2 must play the green ball on all even-number holes,
beginning with hole #2, and his/her own ball on all odd-numbered holes.
- Both the green ball and the regular ball are played until holed out.
- The Low Net Score of the Team for each hole, be it the green ball
or the regular ball, will be used for the team score. The team that
posts the lowest net score without losing the green ball wins. The team
with the second lowest net team score without losing the green ball
is 2nd, etc. If all green balls are lost prior to completion of 18 holes,
the team who completes the most holes prior to losing their green ball
wins.
This is one of CTGA's most popular formats every year.
2-Player Select Drive
Each team member hits his/her Tee Shot on all holes. The team selects
the better of the two shots and both play their 2nd shots from that spot
and continue to play their own ball until it is holed out. The One Low
Net Score of the team for each hole will be used for the team score.
Note: Each player’s Tee Shot must be used on at least two
par-4 holes and one par-3 or par-5 hole on each nine.
The team with the lowest net score for the 18 holes wins. The team with
the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

earns 3 points, etc.
4-Player 6+6+6
Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. For holes
1 through 6, the two lowest net scores of the team for each hole will
be used for the team score. For holes 7 through 12, the three lowest net
scores of the team will be used for the team score. For holes 13 through
18, the low net scores of all 4 team members will be used for the team
score. The team with the lowest team net score wins. The team with the
second lowest team net score is 2nd, etc.
4-Player Baseball (Designated
Hitter)
This fun and popular format gets all 4 team members involved in the scoring.
Optional Formats:
- Each team designates its members as players A, B, C and D. Player
A is designated hitter (DH) on holes #1, 5, 10, and 14. Player B is
DH on holes #2, 6, 11, and 15; player C on #3, 7, 12, and 16; and player
D on #4, 8, 13, and 17. Each team members plays his/her own ball until
it is holed out. The net score of the DH and the lowest net score of
the other 3 players will be used for the team score on each hole. With
no designated hitter on holes #9 and #18, the 2 lowest net scores of
the team are used for the team score. The team with the lowest team
net score wins. The second lowest team net score is 2nd, etc.
- Designated Hitters are determined by Handicap Holes. Player A is
designated hitter (DH) on handicap holes #1, 2, 3, and 4. Player B is
DH on handicap holes #5, 6, 7, 8; player C on handicap holes #9, 10,
11, 12; player D on handicap holes #13, 14, 15, 16. No DH for handicap
holes #17 and 18. All other scoring rules will apply as above.
4-Player 3 Best Ball and Bonus
(3-4)Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed
out. Net Score Points are used to determine Team Score on each hole.
Scoring (All Net):
- Par = 0 points
- Birdie = 1 point
- Eagle = 2
- Bogie = -1
- Double Bogie = -2, etc.
A bonus point is awarded if all 4 players (net scores) par the hole.
Examples:
- 3 pars and 1 bogie = 0 points (since the 3 pars = Quota)
- 4 pars = +1 point (the 4th par is the bonus point)
- 3 pars and 1 birdie = +2 points (bonus point for the 4th score better
than bogie + 1 point for the birdie)
- 2 pars and 2 bogies = -1 point
- 1 birdie, 1 par, 2 bogies = 0 points
- 1 birdie and 3 bogies = -1 point
The team with the lowest net score wins. The team with the second lowest
net score is 2nd, etc.
4-Player ABCD Scramble
Team handicap will be a percentage of the cumulative individual handicaps
of the 4 Team players. After all team members hit their Tee shots, the
team will select the best tee shot and all players hit from that spot.
The best 2nd shot will be determined and all players hit from that spot,
etc., until the ball is holed out. The total number of strokes for each
hole will be used for the team score. Unlike all other formats above where
individual or team net scores determine winners, the adjusted Team handicap
will be used to determine team scores. The team with the lowest net team
score wins. The team with the second lowest net team score is 2nd, etc.
And the Winner Is
In all CTGA tournaments, if multiple players or Teams within each Flight
post identical low net scores, the 1st place winner is determined by a
scorecard playoff using the recommended USGA procedure. Refer to Rule
#19 in our CTGA By-Laws.
Exception: At the CTGA Classic, which is a Medal Play tournament, if multiple
players post identical low net scores within flights, 1st place winner
within that Flight will be determined by a Sudden Death Playoff if the
course will allow us to do so and time permits. Ties for 2nd, 3rd, etc.,
will share prizes.
Optional "Trash" Competitions
CTGA Trash Competition includes Close-To-Pin, Skins and Deuces. Two (2)
Trash Flights will be determined by player handicaps.
Closest-to-the-pin
(no additional fee required) - Each CTP Flight will compete on
two designated Par 3 holes. Winner of a CTP hole will be the player whose
ball, on the green, is measured closest to the hole.
Note: CTP applies only to the first shot attempt
from the teeing area and the ball must come to rest on the green.
Skins (Optional)
Cost to enter Skins is $5.00. Gross scores will be used to determine
Skin winners for each hole. A skin is won if only one player has the lowest
gross score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that
hole is halved and yields no winner.
The Skins pot is determined by the number of Skins players
within each Skins Flight and will be shared by the number of skins won
within that Skins Flight. If no Skins are recorded at a given tournament,
the Skins pot will be carried over to the next tournament, etc., until
a Skins winner is declared.
Deuces (Optional)
Cost to enter Deuces is $5.00. Gross scores will be used to determine
Deuce winners. All players who have natural 2’s on their scorecard
share in the Deuce pot.
The Deuce pot is determined by the number of Deuce players within the
Deuce Flight and will be shared by the total number of 2’s made.
If no Deuces are recorded at a given tournament, the Deuce pot will be
carried over to the next tournament, etc., until a Deuce winner is declared.
A Hole-In-One will not be credited as a Deuce earned.
